MORE GPK ARTWORK

It's been kind of a rotten holiday season and because of the weather and stress I haven't had much time or motivation to do anything, including artwork.
I've continued using cards from the 15th series as reference for my doodles at work and going card by card sketching out each one.

I finished up my version of card #590 (Little-Leak Len/ Snot-Ball Saul). I thought it might be fun to put other baseball related GPK's on the field with him. There were three more I could find in the original 15 series but one of them (#603) was also in the 15th series so I figured I'd save him for later.

#140 Mouth Phil/ Tooth Les

#291 Homer Runt/ Screwball Lew

#603 Mitch Mitt/ Foul Bill

I put the first three in the drawing together and colored it with Photoshop.

Photobucket

I wasn't really very happy with the end result. If I could go back I would have done a team photo with all four cards, the Foul Bill from the giant card series, and the two players from the 15th series card-back "Flick-it" flip book. Who knows, I may do it sometime.

The next card #591 (Frank Footer/ Dog Bites Boyd) I sketched out in ballpoint pen.

Photobucket

I figured I'd just leave this one as-is and not mess with the coloring or background.

I did the same thing with the next card #592 (Extra Dexter/ Flabby Abby). That was a lot of fun drawing all those fat rolls.

Photobucket

Photobucket

I'm still working on the next card #593 (Footloose Fred/ Lucky Lew). It took me three days to draw this one. I kept messing up the proportions somehow and was kind of having a slump. I just kept throwing them away until I felt I finally got it right.

Photobucket

I never thought this card looked much like a GPK because with the animal features it seemed to come across more like a cartoon character. I know the cards were supposed to spoof the Cabbage Patch Kids so I always figured the animal related ones should have resembled the "Koozas" which were animal versions of Cabage patch kids.

Photobucket

I'll finish coloring this one eventually.

Photobucket

I decided to skip to card #595 (Mal Practice/ Intensive Carrie) next because honestly I felt it would be a little bit tougher with all the detail and I needed a challenge.

Photobucket

I drew the original illustration in felt-tip sharpie.

Photobucket

I also decided I was going to color this one old-school with colored pencils instead of the computer. I used the white colored pencil to blend the colors.

Photobucket

I did end up using photoshop to do the lights at the top.

I ask my friend Tim Pieper who is also a cartoonist to work on #596 (Sani Klaus/ Sick Nick). He is almost finished and it's looking good. I'll post a picture of it when he's done.

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM STEVE POTTER

This is a video that I posted on December 18th, 2007 on Myspace video. On Christmas eve it was rated in the top 10 viewed all day and received over 40,000 views that evening. I was surprised and pleased to say the least. I thought I'd repost it here for anyone who didn't see it back then.

MY CHRISTMAS GPK ILLUSTRATION

Since I've been doing quite a bit of Garbage Pail Kid related artwork recently I decided it was time to do a Christmas themed illustration. There are quite a few cards that deal with Santa and the holidays but I finally decided to use card #254 (Chris Mess/ Sandy Clod) from the 7th series as a reference.

Photobucket

This card always reminded me of the escaped mental patient who stole a Santa outfit played by Larry Drake in the Tales From the Crypt episode "All Through the House". It was the second episode of the show and came out two years after the card was made.

Photobucket

I did the original drawing in felt-tip pen and decided after sketching it out to remove the wreath and lights that were on his back since I didn't really feel they were essential to the gag. I know he's supposed to be a thief but I figured beating someone with a blackjack and pickpocketing them was good enough.

Photobucket

I colored it on the computer with photoshop and remade the Garbage Pail Kids logo into a "Merry Christmas" banner.

Photobucket

I figured I could post it for friends and family for the holidays. Feel free to use it yourself it you'd like. Merry Christmas!!

RECENT GARBAGE PAIL KID ART

Lately I've been doing a bunch of Garbage Pail Kid related artwork so I thought I'd post some of it. I really like doing my own versions of some of the old cards and it's really helped to get me out of an artistic slump.

I figured it might be fun just to start with the 15th series cards so the first one I did was #581 (Shel Game/ 3-Card Monte). Here is the original card.

Photobucket

I did the original illustration in felt-tip pen and tried to mix my own style with a little bit of Tom Bunk and Robert Crumb.

Photobucket

Here is the final version after I colored it with photoshop and added the logo and name banner.

Photobucket

The next card is #582 (Take-out Dinah/ Chow Mame).

Photobucket

I did this one with felt-tip also.

Photobucket

For the final colored version I did on Photoshop I decided to add another G.P.K. into the image. On her plate I added (Misfortune Cookie/ Chow Maynard) from card #509 from series 13.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Next I did card #583 (Lyle Tile/ Harry Glyph).

Photobucket

I did the original figure and background in ballpoint pen.

Photobucket

I wanted to change things up for the final Photoshop version so I added some repetition.

Photobucket

Card #584 (Slimy Hymie/ Crawlin' Rollin) was next.

Photobucket

I knew I was going to have fun with the worms. I did this one in felt-tip and decided to do a full figure.

Photobucket

I spent a little more time coloring this one. I wanted to add some of the shading and highlights I didn't really do on the previous cards.

Photobucket

I still did a card version to stay with the program.

Photobucket

I did one of my favorite cards #585 (Picky Nick/ Beulah Ghoul) next.

Photobucket

I decided instead of the skull on the card I would slip in another G.P.K. again and I knew the perfect one right off the bat. Another one of my favorites #328 (Glowing Amber/ Bright Dwight) from the 8th series.

Photobucket

I sketched this one in ballpoint with shading this time.

Photobucket

For the final Photoshop image I was lucky enough to have a great scan of the original card art so I just tweaked the background and cut, pasted, and colored out the part I needed.

Photobucket

I figured while I already had the Glowing Amber version that I'd do a final colr version of that card also.

Photobucket

The next card in the 15th series was #586 (Peter Cheater/ Dean List).

Photobucket

I did the original drawing in felt-tip pen again.

Photobucket

I changed a couple of minor things in the final version and my daughter Sam helped out coloring it. She did a perfect job and was an amazingly fast learner.

Photobucket

#587 (Mala Nutrition/ Cornelia Flake) was a lot of fun.

Photobucket

I was inspired by Tom Bunk again while working on this. I wanted to add some of his gross little details like the zits and band-aid. I did the original drawing in felt-tip again.

Photobucket

For the final colored version I decided to import a tile grid and enlarge the pupils because my wife thought she looked psycho. I agreed with her and fixed them but I did have to remind her that it's not normal to eat cereal out of the toilet.
I also used a Wacky Package image from the 70's for the cereal box.

Photobucket

Photobucket

The next card #588 is (Yo! Gert/ Ice cream Connie).

Photobucket

I thought I would do a version where she was in a bowl instead of a cone. I did the drawing in felt-tip.

Photobucket

I'm not too happy with the way it turned out and will most likely redo it later. Sam and I had fun coloring it though. She made a version where it was mint chocolate-chip, and I made a strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate version we named "Neal Politan".

Photobucket

The next card I did was #589 (Ecch Benedict/ Brain Les).

Photobucket

I just sketched it out with pencil and have yet to do a colored version.

Photobucket

I plan on doing a colored version in the near future.

Another one I'm still working on is the next card #590 (Little Leak Len/ Snot-ball Saul)

Photobucket

So far I just drew the figure in felt-tip. I'm thinking it might be fun to put other baseball related G.P.K.s on the field.

Photobucket

One more piece of Garbage Pail Kids art I wanted to share is a ceramic Cabbage Patch Kid I bought at a thrift store a while back. I purchased it with the intentions of painting it as Leaky Lindsay/ Messie Tessie but I hadn't gotten around to doing it. I finally painted it the other day and even though the hair/clothes still aren't the right color I like it a lot better now.
Here are some pics:

I'll keep posting updates on my Garbage Pail Kid art as I'm working on it. Happy Holidays!!
