TOPPS DALLAS COWBOYS CHEERLEADERS 1981

In my quest to document and share the Topps trading cards of the 80's I begin 1981 with the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Giant Full Color Photocards series. I guess you could categorize these as sports cards but I'm not sure if cheer leading is technically a sport. I just figured since I happen to own the full set and there has been a severe lack of "pretty" ladies on my blog, I'd do a post.

Sometime around the years 1981-1982 the Dallas Cheerleaders became quite popular. I guess enough to give them their own trading card series. It's kind of an odd set for Topps for a number of reasons:

- First off I'm not really sure if these cards were marketed for girls or boys? You'd think that cheerleaders are primarily eye-candy for male sports fans but the backs of the cards are full of cheerleading info that would mostly be of interest to girls.

- Second of all the cards are 5x7" which are more like mini-posters than a typical sports trading card.

- Another odd thing is that the cards only came 1 to a pack and there is only 30 different cards in the set which is atypical for a Topps series.

*FUN FACTS*
The Dallas Cheerleaders actually have 2 movies and have had quite a few television appearances:

* The Love Boat - Episodes #62 and #63[4] - One cheerleader has an unwanted admirer follow her on the ship. Another is hit on by her mom's fiance. As a group thecheerleaders perform their routines.
* Family Feud - Participated as a team, on celebrity special for charity against the Cowboys on the week of 30 June - 4 July 1980.
* Harry and the Hendersons TV Series - Made guest appearance on show.
* Billy Bob's New Year Special for CBS.
* Nashville Palace Show (1981) - Hosted by John Aylesworth.
* Saturday Night Live.
* The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
* The Late Show with David Letterman.
* Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team.
* Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?- Participated on a celebrity special for charity in 2008.

I bought boxes of those Raiders cards quite some time after they came out. I got them for $5.00 a box or so. I bought them strictly for the gum, which was beyond stale. I had bought the cards when they first came out, too, but when I found a bunch of boxes at a PA flea market I went nuts.

I think the set cost me $2.00. Even at that price I considered whether or not to buy them.
